Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail Overview

Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail is the primary adult detention facility for York County. It is a regional jail, not a York County-only jail and not a Virginia Department of Corrections state prison. VPRJ's own materials identify its service localities as James City County, York County, Williamsburg, and Poquoson. The York-Poquoson Sheriff's Office is the local arresting and law-enforcement agency for York County and Poquoson, while VPRJ is the custody facility used when an adult is held after arrest.

The 2024 VPRJ security-system RFP describes the jail as operated by the Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail Board Authority under Virginia regional-jail authority law. It says the jail was constructed in 1997 and is about 166,000 square feet. All inmate housing is on the ground floor. Visitation booths and added offices are on the second floor, and the communications room is on the third floor. The same source describes both direct and indirect supervision at the facility.

Virginia Peninsula Jail Population

VPRJ population figures are regional. They should not be read as a York County-only count because the jail serves several localities. The 2024 RFP gives a DOC rated capacity of 290 inmates and a current average daily population of 375. It also says the jail has held more than 500 inmates in past years. That places the 2024 reported ADP about 85 people over rated capacity.

The research could not verify a full static search-field list, so rely on the live application's displayed controls. If the frame does not load, use a modern browser. Virginia Peninsula Jail Contact

VPRJ is in Williamsburg, which can confuse York County users who expect a Yorktown jail. The York-Poquoson Sheriff's Office is at Goodwin Neck Road in Yorktown, but VPRJ is the jail used for adult custody. VPRJ's lobby remains open for people reporting for DNA or fingerprinting, reporting for a video visit, attorneys meeting clients, people needing to see the magistrate, people placing money on an inmate account, and people dropping off medication.

From east of Williamsburg or Virginia Beach, VPRJ directions say to take I-64 West to Exit 247, turn right onto Route 238 West, then turn left onto Route 143 West. From west of Williamsburg, take I-64 East to Exit 247 and turn right onto Route 143 West. Visitor parking must be in the visitor parking section only.

Visiting VPRJ Inmates

VPRJ uses on-site video visitation scheduled in advance through the GTL visit platform. Current VPRJ visitation guidance says inmates may have up to four individuals per visit, with two adult visitors and two minor visitors during a single visit. The FAQ says visits are 20 minutes and that inmates are allowed one visit every seven days. Visitor timing language differs across VPRJ pages, so arriving at least 15 minutes early is the cautious reading.

VPRJ Mail Phone Money

VPRJ money rules allow money orders or cashier's checks written to the inmate. They may be brought to the jail or mailed to the inmate at the VPRJ address. The lobby kiosk is available during posted lobby money hours and accepts $20, $50, and $100 bills. Web deposits go through ConnectNetwork. Commissary orders are placed at 11:00 a.m. each Friday, and the research found no restriction on when deposits can be made.

Confirm custody before sending funds because a release, transfer, or state-prison move can change the correct deposit channel.

Booking at Virginia Peninsula Jail

York County adult arrests are routed through local law enforcement, the magistrate or court, and VPRJ when the person is held. A typical booking can include identity intake, charge intake, search and property handling, fingerprints or booking photo where applicable, medical and mental-health screening, classification, and housing assignment. VPRJ does not publish a detailed public intake timeline in the reviewed pages, so new bookings may not appear on the current inmate list immediately.

Bond information should be confirmed through VPRJ, the magistrate, court, or a bondsman. VPRJ's public bond FAQ is brief and tells users to refer to the bail bondsmen directory. A bond may not release the person if another agency hold, probation or parole hold, federal hold, immigration detainer, or no-bond order applies.

VPRJ Records and Photos

VPRJ is also important for booking-photo questions. The York-Poquoson Sheriff's Office FOIA page says arrestee photographs are not routinely held by the Sheriff's Office and are instead in VPRJ's possession. Adult photos may be withheld if release would jeopardize an investigation, such as when a photo or live lineup could be tainted.
